People have a yearning to be special. Society imposes an often-misconstrued sense of what we want to be special at, such as being a special professional sports star versus being a special outstanding teacher, or as being a Hollywood star versus being an outstanding social worker, and so on. However, be it as it may, most people just want to be special at whoever they are or at whatever they do.

Well, what does it mean to be special? And, whatever being special does mean, is it received by nature or nurture, is it achieved by the merit of our parents, known as zechut avot, or is it achieved by one’s own hard work?

And finally, what can only one being special accomplish, that not being special can’t accomplish?

This lecture is based on a maamor (-Link) the Rebbe delivered on this Shabbos in 1965, in which the Rebbe explains why the Torah interrupts in middle of the discussion of Moses going to speak with Pharaoh to tell us the lineage of Moses and the age of Moses. (a) Don’t we already know who Moses is? (b) The verse states that Moses was 80 years old, however, Moses was actually 79 years old?
