Consider hip-hop in a fine art context. If you wish to truly understand a hip-hop song, it’s vital to know certain aspects of the time period including the socio-political context, the relevant/past artists that could be referenced, current slang of the time, etc. The same type of context you might consider in any art history class.

A painting teacher might give you an exercise in which you create a new piece but in the style of an old master. Monet or maybe Picasso. The same exercise can be used with any medium; dance, literature, music, etc. Here I present a tribute to Craig Mack by channeling his style. Paying homage.

Craig Mack is most known for his hit “Flava In Ya Ear” where he demonstrates a mastery of timing and emphasis. In my satire “It’s Gettin’ Old” I channel his expressive rhythm while, also, turning the theme on its head, revealing the “not so brand new flava in ya ear,” thus, making a comment on the repetitive subject matter conveyed in popular rap music; “…from guns to funds and don’t forget the range rov.” Enjoy.
