Stev Zar @sstevann is the Melbourne-based DJ behind UMAMI, a party that celebrates QT/POC talent that resides in or passes thru Burn City. Despite the lockdowns, UMAMI are still bringing together their community via a weekly series of livestreams on their instagram (umami.collective). Stev's mix is a perfect distillation of their chaotic, colourful, and cohesive sound. Shake yr ass.
From Stev: "Travelling around Auckland and Sydney for gigs in January I got to explore various spaces playing club/rave music, I fell back in love again with music after not feeling inspired for a while. I put my head down this month and cycled through the depths of Bandcamp, Soundcloud, YouTube and through old vinyls for body-moving tunes. Included in this mix is a plethora of my favourite artists; M.E.S.H, Bored Lord, Tygapaw, Player, Ase Manual and quest?onmarc to name a few. All pioneers of Electronic/Ballroom/Techno/Jersey sounds. Every track in this mix I hold dear to my heart, I attribute my success to these phenomenal selectors as I play their tracks in clubs while shaking my ass.
I started off the mix as an ode to my alter ego, AN 1Ć (Ahn-Itch), in which they play more experiment/euphoric sounds. I then entered a phase of Club/Ballroom/Techno music then ended it with some 145-160 BM turbo Gabber/Hardstyle shit. Music for me is all about evolving to fit the space/time quota, whilst exploring your own style or sound. Even through I cycle through different genres, I will never cease to play Ballroom/Vogue music, and my love extends to the beautiful Ballroom scene in Australia and New Zealand/Aotearoa."
