Funny story. I have this elaborate justification in my head, along the following lines:

One of the few questions posed in common between my Philosophy classes and my Music classes was "so here's a person who toiled away in obscurity and never saw appreciation (or remuneration) for their work, in their lifetimes -- never knew that their work would be 'important.' Why, then, did they continue? Why should YOU continue, knowing the likelihood that you'll meet the same fate?"

And I finally have an answer now, something to do with the work being valuable in and of itself and there being intrinsic rewards in knowing that you put something of value into the world, on the off chance that it will reach at least one other person and do the tiniest bit of good.

But when I posed this question to my wife last night, she had an answer that I suddenly realized amounts to the exact same thing: "y'know, what else are ya gonna do?!"

I don't think she quite got why I laughed and laughed.
