I was playing with Sunrizer synth sounds, created a short segment using the "Lifeforms" synth which I looped, then created a second Lifeforms track playing the synth manually all the way through, and took segments from that to create a third track, which I matched to segments of the loop track I'd created...but by then cutting out segments of the loop track (and playing with GB settings for other segments of the loop track....e.g. volume, and reversing the loop a couple of times). Fiddly, but fun! I mixed the pan for the three Lifeforms tracks across left, centre and right.
I really liked what I was hearing, and kept thinking of Bespin, or Cloud City, in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back...
Then I did something which made it feel a lot more 1950s sci-fi, a lot more retro. I added a theremin! I love the theremin sound, and thought it fit the feel of the track really well. I played it like a modern day drone sound, with minor note variations only.
The image I found (for which I adjusted the contrast) is the Hawkmen's sky city from the 1936 Flash Gordon serial, which matched my retro sci-fi feel.
So, there you have it, a retro 1950s homage to Star Wars/Flash Gordon !!!
