Description

The Romans attempted to wipe out the Caledonians and Picts who inhabited Scotland at that time. They even won a great victory against the Picts at Mons Graupius in AD 84.

But in AD 117 the IX Hispanica Legion (so named because it was originally formed in Spain, but contained soldiers from all over the empire)...vanished without a trace.

There are a couple of films that tell versions of the story - The Eagle Of The Ninth, and Centurion.

Hadrian's wall, and the less successful Antonine wall further North, were built as defensive walls against the Picts who ultimately remained unvanquished by the Romans.

The Scots themselves didn't invade (from present day Northern Ireland) until around 500 AD and fought the Picts and Caledonians until the people's were united through marriage in 843 AD.
