This was a turbulent period, and the new town had to be defended with the establishment of Fort Protector to shelter the English settlers from the powerful O’Moores that had been displaced by their arrival. Portlaoise is sheltered by the Slieve Bloom Mountains to the west, with the Great Heath spreading outwards to the east of the town.
