When Betsy DeVos testified before the Senate education committee last week, she drew fire from Democrats who grilled her in the confirmation hearing. Their complaint was principally for two reasons:
1) She supports parents to make the decision where they want to send their children. School choice.
2) She has personally given money to Christian organizations and schools whose mission she supports.
Democrats cried horror as though it was heresy to choose anything for your life except the secularism of the federal government.
But what are politicians like Al Franken and Patty Murray really protesting? Individual liberty for parents and the right to free association of private citizens. In their worldview, only the nanny state can choose where your kids go to school and to whom public officials can give their private donations.
The reign of Big Brother has been long in education, which is why parents should be cheering on Betsy DeVos.
