President Barack Obama recently observed that Donald Trump is not ideological, but pragmatic. I agree. Donald Trump is a pragmatist who values the “deal” above all else.
Pragmatists are often morally flexible and their decision making is based on “what gets the job done” (as opposed to being guided by moral absolutes).
This may challenge the expectations of ideological conservatives and people of convictional faith who supported Trump. Who he now chooses to surround himself with matters immensely.
Those who are ideologically conservative or convictional about their faith have already made decisions that limit the range of options in any given situation. Pragmatists don’t tend to see such a bounded set of options.
Let’s hope that Trump, does indeed, surround himself with the best and brightest.
And may they be men and women of conviction.
