75 years ago today, at 7:48 am in Hawaii, forces of the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked the American Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor. The attack involved 353 aircraft flown from six Japanese aircraft carriers. The attack was savage, intended to destroy the U.S. Pacific Fleet before Japan would even declare war.
By the end of the day more than 2,000 Americans would be dead, almost 1,200 wounded. President Roosevelt, asking Congress for a declaration of war, called December 7, 1941 “a date that will live in infamy.”
And so it does, even as our brave and honored veterans of Pearl Harbor and World War II are passing from our midst. December 7, 1941 is still a date that lives in infamy.
