I've been experimenting with SID-emulators for the past year or so. The C64 soundchip is probably way superior but there's something about the NES (something beyond nostalgia). Channel four on the SID (the noise channel) has its envelope set to near-zero to get that snare sound. Other than one or two places where I layered multiple outputs to get a specific sound, this is all capable of being generated by a single NES SID. Very much looking forward to working my way up to using actual hardware, but as for now, this was generated in LMMS via Nescaline.
Oh right, my new moniker, it just popped into my head. Anything I release in the next few years (that isn't in a band) will probably be under that name, so keep your eyes peeled
