Recorded December 19, 2009.
Lily grew up in the neighborhood just across the Suzhou Creek. Walking around the area she talks about the Fu JIan Bei Lu bridge (aka. Lao Zha Qiao), the river, and how it is always somehow in her memories.
We walk through her old local residential area, that is planned to be demolished as soon as the current residents are cleared.
We recently returned to take photos of the walk, over a year later. What was amazing was that probably 90% of the people have moved out and all that is left is the shells of their row houses. This is in stark contrast of the recording where no one had moved and the lanes were still so full of life.
By the time this is put in book form, the area may already be demolished. In any case, it is worth a visit to catch a glimpse of local life.
Photos and transcripts to follow soon.
