Description

Anita Martin talks about the Tea Rooms in Freshwater Bay. Anita's parents James and Helen McFarlane were proprietors of McFarlane’s Boat Shed and Tea Rooms, built over the river on the Esplanade at Peppermint Grove. When Mrs Martin was born in 1930, the family were already living on the premises and her mother remained there until c. 1950, running the business alone after the death of James McFarlane c. 1939/40.

Hear about the Val boats dropping in for Mills and Ware fruit cake and a cup of tea and the dinner dances for the Naval personnel, not to mention how Mrs Mac catered for the swimmers false teeth!
