Season 3 Episode 2 Military Girlfriends
Often the most overlooked demographic when thinking about the military community. Viewed as a temporary part of the community and not given the support they deserve, the Military Girlfriend/Boyfriend is a hard place to find yourself.
We have on with us this week Kaitlyn Berger, a long term Airforce Girlfriend who lives with her Airmen, and they have been together for years. She discusses how receiving support from the unit, as well as the other people within the community is often difficult. Despite living very near the same life as a military spouse without the title, things are often harder. Having chosen thus far to explore their relationship and not rush into the “stereotypical” young military marriage life, they are all too often looked down on.
We discuss why there is that stereotype as far as marrying young and fast, and how we can better serve relationships that are choosing to take things at their own pace.
“It’s hard to support someone in the military knowing you aren’t recognized by the military….I want to be here for my person but I am not recognized as someone important in their life”-Kaitlyn Berger
We also are happy to see that things have grown and changed much since Sabrina and Ashley were the girlfriend, but there are still ways to go to be more inclusive and understanding.
