Papaphilia is the solo project of Melbourne musician Fjorn Butler. Morphing samples of vocalizations of exaltation and sensuality from RnB, Disco, Pop and other genres into an experimental electronic palette, Fjorn aurally interrogates the aesthetics of political representation in the contemporary colonial context - a culture of obedience to the imaginary of racial and sexual supremacy. Adapting stoned rhythms and backwashed synths in accelerated pace, patterns and intonations are drawn from 90s dance music cultures.
Currently Fjorn is one third of deep psychedelic improvised electronic trio Gurner with Emma Albury (Eko Eko Azarak, Leopard Leg) and Sharryn Koppens (Dick Threats). She is also one part of the rarely seen mashed out dance electronic duo In Vivo with Sean McMorrow (Cervere/ Noematic Oblivion).
Papaphilia's current releases include 4 Animals Dream of a Shadow on Nice Music and À L’état Brut on Happy Endin’, which together are a two-part exploration of the sonic possibilities of finding political resonance in sensorial disorientation as an embodied and durational opening. Tune in Thursday to hear their unique piece which is a compilation of excerpts from new material.
