He is co-director of Liquid Architecture, and founded fascinating projects like OtherFilm and the Instrument Builders Project. Joel also produces his own experimental music and plays in Sky Needle and Soft Power.
On his mix called 'Operation Hourglass': "For the last 14 months my sound studio has been pretty untouched as it lives in a room with two babies, and Helen and I, so I made this mix in a race against time while Helen took the babies for a walk one morning. The mix is full of juxtapositions between ego-dissolving trance / collapse works on the one hand and uber self-conscious meta-commentaries on the other. It’s always good to have a healthy dose of both. Everything here is dramatically excerpted and cut together roughly, possibly a reflection of how compartmentalized, fragmented and strangely discontinuous life can feel right now."
