Description

In episode 1 of Transformational Healthcare Leadership from Saïd Business School, Dr Mark O’Brien talks to Professor Bruno Holthof, a Visiting Professor of Health Innovation in the Nuffield Department of Medicine at Oxford University and an investment partner of the EQT Health Economics Fund.

“My advice is if you really have some important issues to solve, make sure you prioritise and be ruthless in your prioritisation.”

Bruno is an incredibly experienced healthcare leader having spent nearly 40 years successfully straddling the scientific and management world. After qualifying in medicine Bruno went on to earn an MBA and then a PhD in Health Economics. He was a partner with McKinsey & Company and served a wide range of healthcare clients, gaining significant expertise in the areas of strategy, organisation and operations.

He later moved into an executive position, first as CEO at Antwerp Hospital Network (ZNA), where he transformed ZNA into the most profitable hospital group in Belgium, and then as CEO of Oxford University Hospitals (OUH) where he was involved in the development of the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine. He said one of the most important things that he did in both organisations was putting the right leaders in charge of each of the clinical services.

Bruno is passionate about innovation in the healthcare industry and sees it as a key driver in improving patient outcomes. He is convinced that in the next 10 years the advances in genomics and artificial intelligence will translate into real benefits for individual patients and entire populations.
