During World War One, young men of all classes were encouraged to join up to the Armed Forces by various means. One such was the 'Recruiting Sergeant' who bought them beer and regaled them with great tales of valour. Another was the shaming force of peer pressure, the intimation that anyone who didn't sign up was ultimately a coward.
