“La Dj”, a nickname given by close friends, was encouraged by other musicians and DJs to try DJing, as they noted her excellent taste in music and understanding of musical theory, which La Dj likens to many years as a singer in National Honor Choirs in the United States and Costa Rica.
La Dj learned spinning vinyl with the trance and progressive house genres. After less than a year, La Dj began playing at clubs and bars and was invited to form part of a recognized DJ crew in Atlanta, wherein she was one of the only two female DJs.
After several life-altering experiences, La Dj took an extensive hiatus from the decks stating, “there were many significant deaths around me, and I just wanted silence.” She eventually found inspiration again and returned to DJing with a different fervor birthed by years of silence in which La Dj began experimenting with Deep House, Deep Tech House, and eventually Downtempo. These days, she is considered one of the Rising Stars in the Downtempo scene.
Although no longer playing strictly vinyl, La Dj’s mixing is freestyle and always impromptu. "I loved digging for vinyl and putting records on and making them work together with nothing but keeping your eye on the record and using your musical ear to mix, which freestyle mixing lets me do.” Currently, La Dj is focusing on podcast recording and playing local events and has plans to continue singing and eventually producing.
