1. President Joe Biden invited Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine’s president, to meet him at the White House on Tuesday. The pair will discuss the “vital importance” of continued American support in Ukraine’s war against Russia. Mr Zelensky will also address some American senators in an attempt to win support. Last week Republicans blocked a new funding package for Ukraine.

2. Israel’s army reached the centre of Khan Younis, a city in the south of the Gaza Strip, after facing fierce resistance from militants. It also reported that it had flooded Hamas tunnels beneath the city. Some 18,000 people in Gaza have been killed since October 7th, according to the enclave’s Hamas-run health ministry.

Spooked, the government subsequently changed the law to ensure only “patriots” may stand.

4. Donald Trump said he would not testify in his civil fraud trial in New York on Monday. Mr Trump is charged with fraudulently inflating the value of his properties. He has already testified once at the trial and was expected to appear again. Mr Trump denies the charges, but the judge has already ruled that some of his financial statements were fraudulent.

5. The children of Narges Mohammadi, an Iranian human-rights activist serving a ten-year prison sentence in Tehran, accepted a Nobel peace prize on her behalf at a ceremony in Oslo. In a speech smuggled out of prison Ms Mohammadi criticised the “tyrannical” Iranian regime and its laws on compulsory hijab-wearing, and insisted that “the Iranian people, with perseverance, will overcome repression and authoritarianism.”
