1. Tens of thousands of Israelis rallied in Tel Aviv and other cities, calling on the prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, to reach a deal to free hostages held by Hamas. Sunday marks six months since their capture. Many protesters chanted anti-government slogans and called for immediate elections. On Saturday Israel’s army said it had recovered the body of Elad Katzir, one of those seized by Hamas during the attacks of October 7th. Around 130 hostages remain in Gaza.

2. Joe Biden’s re-election campaign raised more than $90m in March, up from around $53m in February. This gives the Democrats $192m in their coffers, which the fundraising committee claims is a record for any Democratic campaign at this stage in the election cycle. In contrast Donald Trump’s campaign raised more than $66m in March, giving the Republicans $93m cash on hand.

3. A Russian drone attack on Kharkiv in north-eastern Ukraine killed eight people and wounded at least ten more. Attacks on the city, Ukraine’s second-largest, have increased since December. Strikes have hit the town centre and destroyed both obvious targets and random buildings. “This attack on peaceful residents of Kharkiv once again proves that Russia is a terrorist state,” wrote the mayor, Ihor Terekhov, on Telegram, a messaging platform.

4. Several South American countries offered support to Mexico, which suspended diplomatic ties with Ecuador after its embassy in Quito, Ecuador’s capital, was raided by police on Friday. Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Colombia all criticised the arrest of Jorge Glas, a former vice-president of Ecuador who had sought asylum in the embassy. Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Mexico’s president, had called the raid a “flagrant violation of international law”.

5. Thousands of people took to the streets of Hungary’s capital city, Budapest, to protest against the government of Viktor Orban. Since his Fidesz party returned to power in 2010 it has set about dismantling, undermining or sidelining the country’s institutions. The march’s leader, Peter Magyar, is a former government insider who was once married to Mr Orban’s former justice minister. He has announced plans to launch a pro-EU party.

That could cause a headache for fellow members of both the EU and NATO.

Thousands have flocked to the path of the total eclipse, with lodging-houses full and hotel rooms going at a premium. Skygazers in Texas and Utah in particular should be crossing their fingers, say weather forecasters.
