1. The White House said that Egypt had agreed to send humanitarian aid to Gaza through Kerem Shalom, the main commercial checkpoint between Israel and Gaza. Earlier, the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to halt its offensive in Rafah, a city in southern Gaza, and to allow investigators and journalists to visit the enclave. The UN court said that an earlier demand for Israel to allow more aid to be delivered had failed to stop the humanitarian crisis in Gaza from worsening.

2. Janet Yellen, America’s treasury secretary, said that the G7 group of big economies was considering issuing a loan to Ukraine, secured by profits on frozen Russian assets. Speaking after a meeting of the G7 finance ministers, she said that the EU also still needed to endorse the plan, which could be approved as early as June. Around $282bn-worth of Russian assets are seized in Japan and the West.

The billionaire private-equity magnate called it a “vote for change” spurred in part by a “dramatic rise of antisemitism” under Joe Biden. Mr Schwarzman, a lifelong Republican, had turned away from Mr Trump after the Capitol riot in 2021. His endorsement will help boost Mr Trump’s fundraising, which trails Mr Biden’s.

Michael Gove, a cabinet minister who has been in Parliament for almost 20 years, is among 78 Tory MPs who will not stand again. The Economist's election forecast gives the Conservatives just a 1% chance of winning a majority if the election were held tomorrow.

5. China ended two days of military exercises around Taiwan, conducted as “punishment” of William Lai Ching-te, the country’s new president. China considers Mr Lai a “separatist”. The second day of drills came as tens of thousands of people protested against parliamentary reforms, proposed by the opposition, which would significantly curtail Mr Lai’s administration. Some demonstrators accused the opposition of working in concert with China.

6. More than 300 people and 1,100 houses were buried in a landslide in northern Papua New Guinea around 3am on Friday, according to local media. Hundreds are feared dead. The landslide engulfed Kaokalam, a remote village around 600km north-west of Port Moresby, the capital. It also impacted another five villages and obstructed nearby roads, hampering recovery efforts.

Activision is the game developer behind “Call of Duty”, which the gunman played, while Meta owns Instagram, a social-media platform.
