The Pentagon said it would deploy more fighter jets and warships to the Middle East, as concerns grew about Iran’s response to the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas’s political leader, on its territory on Wednesday. Mr Austin also revoked the authority of the woman overseeing the war court in Guantánamo Bay, where the men are being held.
