1. Israeli strikes killed at least 30 people and injured 110 in Jabalia, a city in northern Gaza, according to Gazan authorities. Médicins sans Frontières, a charity, warned that thousands of people were trapped in a refugee camp there amid an Israeli ground offensive. Earlier the Israel Defence Forces said they would conduct “a thorough review” after strikes on southern Lebanon injured two United Nations peacekeepers. The attacks drew condemnation from world leaders; the UN’s peacekeeping mission in Lebanon called it a “grave violation of international humanitarian law”.

2. Boeing will cut 17,000 jobs—10% of its workers—and further delay the launch of its massive 777x plane. The aerospace giant is losing $1bn a month from a labour strike that began in mid-September and brought production of its main passenger jet to a halt. Boeing is still recovering from a safety crisis that began in January, when a panel blew out mid-flight.

3. China’s finance minister said the country will “significantly increase” **debt issuance **to fight its economic slowdown. The fiscal stimulus is designed to stabilise the property market, replenish the capital of state banks and offer subsidies to poorer people. The world’s second-largest economy is stuck in the deflationary doldrums because of **a property slump **and weak consumer confidence.

4. Tesla’s shares fell by almost 9% after Elon Musk unveiled “cybercab”, a fully **automated **robotaxi. The keenly awaited event in Los Angeles leaned heavily on performance—the EV-maker’s boss rode around a studio lot in the car, which has no steering wheel or pedals—but investors thought it was light on detail. If regulators approve, cybercab production will begin in 2026 and retail for less than $30,000 (£23,000).

5. America expanded sanctions against Iran, targeting its petroleum and petrochemical trade in retaliation for its attack on Israel earlier this month. Iran’s oil terminals provide most of its foreign-currency income. Israel, which is preparing its own counter-attack, may be considering striking them. But President Joe Biden has publicly warned against the move, which would cause energy prices to spike.

6. British Airways said it would cancel hundreds of long-haul flights because of “delays to the delivery of engines and parts” from Rolls-Royce, a manufacturer. The supply-chain snafu has forced the carrier to ground some of its aircraft; older planes that had been plugging the shortage now require downtime for routine maintenance. Rolls-Royce said it was working to “minimise the impact” of its limited supplies.

7. Comet A3, which astronomers have dubbed the “comet of the century” for its brightness, will light up skies in the northern hemisphere between October 12th and 30th. It will come closest to Earth on Saturday. The comet, which will be visible to the naked eye, visits the inner solar system roughly every 80,000 years. That means it was last seen around the time thatHomo sapiensspread to Asia.

Should Taiwanese students study Chinese history or just emphasize the history of Taiwan Island? **
**For example, most all my students did not know the origin of Double Ten Holiday. **
