Fears have been rising this week that the covid-19 vaccination campaign in Africa is stalling. Many countries suffer shortages of jabs. Others have stocks they cannot use. Malawi has destroyed almost 20,000 expired doses; South Sudan plans to bin 59,000. But, with less publicity, the pandemic also threatens to unravel decades of progress in routine immunisation campaigns for other diseases. In a recent survey conducted by the World Health Organisation, nearly 40% of countries worldwide are experiencing disruptions to vaccinations. Sixty mass immunisation campaigns, 23 of which are for measles, are currently postponed. These delays could put around 228m people at risk of measles and other diseases including diphtheria, polio and yellow fever. The pandemic hinders disease prevention in other ways too. Draconian lockdown measures, abuses by law enforcement and the economic slump caused by covid-19 threaten to spread infections. The epidemics of tomorrow may be caused by the pandemic of today.
