In a riposte to American efforts to reinvigorate alliances in Asia, Wang Yi, China’s foreign minister, is on a charm offensive. He has been meeting his counterparts from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore one-on-one since Wednesday. There is lots to discuss: co-operation on covid-19, efforts to spur economic growth, the political crisis in Myanmar and North Korea’s recent missile launch. South-East Asian countries would rather not choose sides in the Sino-American rivalry. But nor will they shy away from criticising Chinese affronts to their sovereignty. Over 200 Chinese vessels are anchored on a reef in the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone that China claims as its own. The infuriated Philippine government has dispatched fighter jets to monitor the area. Indonesia and Malaysia will sympathise. They are also embroiled in territorial disputes with China, which claims a vast swathe of the South China Sea. Mr Wang may struggle to keep all the talks on an even keel.
為了反制美國為振興其亞洲盟友所作的努力，中國外交部長王毅發動了魅力攻勢。自 (本) 週三以來，王毅一直與印尼、馬來西亞、菲律賓以及新加坡的外長 (或相對應之官員) 進行一對一的會談。很多議題值得好好討論：對抗新冠疫情之合作、為振興經濟成長所做的努力、緬甸的政治危機以及北韓近來所發射之飛/導彈。東南亞國家不願在中美競爭中選邊站，但他們也不會避諱批評中國對自身主權的侵犯。在菲律賓所聲稱擁有的專屬經濟區/海域中，有兩百多艘中國船隻停泊在島礁上。憤怒的菲律賓政府已派出戰機監視著該地區。印尼和馬來西亞皆表示同情，而他們也捲入了與中國的領土/海爭端中，因後者聲稱擁有整個浩浩蕩蕩的南中國海。(中國外交部長) 王毅可能無法得心應手地處理每一場會談。
