Tai-Ex opening
The Tai-Ex opened up 144-points this morning from yesterday's close, at
24,449 on turnover of 7.4-billion N-T.
The market closed slightly higher on Tuesday following a lackluster
performance on Wall Street overnight ahead of Nvidia's quarterly earnings
report - which is due out tomorrow Taiwan time.
First local dengue fever cases of year confirmed in Kaohsiung
The Centers for Disease Control has confirmed the first local dengue fever
cases of the year.
According to the C-D-C, the cases were reported during the week of August 19
to 25 and involved a cluster of four people in Kaohsiung.
The C-D-C says local health authorities have now expanded testing to 101
potential contacts.
C-D-C spokeswoman Tseng Shu-hui says a regional management center is now
working with the local government to reduce (減少) the risk of an epidemic ..
…. while the local government has also set up a command center for disease
prevention action.
Sylvia Chang to receive Camellia Award at 30th Busan Film Festival
Actress and director Sylvia Chang has been named the recipient of the
Camellia Award at the 30th Busan International Film Festival.
The award has been announced as Chang's upcoming film "Measure in Love" has
been selected by the festival for the Open Cinema section - an outdoor
screening venue (場地) showcasing new films that blend artistic merit with
popular appeal.
Speaking to reporters, Chang said she's delighted to receive the honor and
hopes it will inspire other female filmmakers and those working in the arts.
The Camellia Award was established in 2024 to honor the power of women in
film.
It will be presented to Chang at the opening ceremony of the festival on
September 17.
President Trump says government will seek death penalty in Washington, D.C., murder cases
US President Donald Trump is suggesting the government will seek the death
penalty for alleged criminals suspected of committing (犯) murders in
Washington, D.C.

Australia Police Officers Killed in Shooting
Australian police have identified a suspect who shot and killed two police
officers and seriously wounded a third as the search for the shooter entered
day two in a vast, remote rural area in the country’s southeast.
Police say today that 56-year-old Dezi Freeman was heavily armed and
experienced in wilderness survival skills.
The shooting happened on Tuesday, when 10 armed police officers tried to
execute a search warrant at Freeman’s property in northeast of Melbourne.
Australian news outlets widely reported that Freeman espoused
(投身(活動),支持) so-called sovereign citizen beliefs, with members of
self-proclaimed sovereign citizen movements using debunked legal theories to
reject government authority.
Sri Lanka ExPrez Granted Bail
Sri Lanka’s former President Ranil Wickremesinghe has been granted bail
after being arrested over allegations of misusing (濫用) public funds while
in office.
Wickremesinghe is the most prominent among dozens of high former government
and political leaders being investigated for corruption under President Anura
Kumara Dissanayake,
who was elected last year on an anti-corruption platform.
Wickremesinghe is accused of using public funds to attend his wife’s
graduation ceremony in London.
His party says he was invited in his official capacity.
