Communication With an Impact
For Halelly, communication is like the expression of your psychology. She explains that psychology is what goes on inside. So with that, communication is the way in which you can convey what you think to others. She also believes that communication is crucial in every endeavor, whether in personal or professional relationships. It is a stepping stone to success regardless of what profession one chooses. To communicate with an impact, Halelly says that there must be a shared goal. She means that the conveyor and receiver of the message should have the same way of thinking and seeing things. The message should be clear enough that both parties understand.
It’s Not Just About Content
Most people focus on the content of their speech when preparing for a presentation. While this is not wrong, Halelly comments that they forget about nonverbal cues. So, when she trains, one of the things she teaches is making sure that the verbal and nonverbal messages are aligned. The science behind it is that the human brain continually seeks information that tells when there is some potential danger. Social safety is just as important as physical safety.
So, when there is an incongruence between what is said and how it is said, the brain always assumes the nonverbal part to be true. Halelly gives an example of saying, “I am not angry”, but her facial expression tells that she is angry. For the other person, they believe that Halelly is angry despite her words. From this, the conclusion is drawn that body language is just as critical as the delivered message.
