Thoughts to Emotions to Actions

The subconscious controls majority of the brainpower. Not only does it handle bodily functions, but also emotions. Thus, the subconscious is in charge of managing thoughts. Social psychologist Jonathan Haidt used a compelling analogy by comparing the conscious and subconscious mind to a rider and an elephant. The rider is in control when the elephant agrees to the direction they go. But when the elephant goes another way, the rider loses control. What happens is that the thoughts trigger emotions, which then trigger actions. A typical example is when one feels anger or jealousy. It is also applicable when one lacks confidence, which results in becoming paralyzed or speaking with a less assertive voice.

Brain Paradox

There is one thing the brain does not understand – negation. It does not understand the word “not” at all. So when one thinks of not doing something, it becomes all the more present in mind. For example, when thinking about “not coming in late,” the person comes in late because the “coming in late” part is where the brain focuses. This is a problem-oriented thought. To change this, negation must be turned into a positive affirmative sentence – a resource-oriented thought. Instead of “I do not want to be nervous,” think of “I will be calm and focused.” This way, there is more energy used in thinking positive affirmations than pushing negations aside.
