Welcome to episode #197! This week, Matt and Braden talk about social media.
When you’re looking at social media, remember you’re looking at the highlight reel.
It can be easy to compare and we feel bad about ourselves or where we are in life. It creates a nasty cycle. The emotions are negative, we are filled with longing and our relationships can become passive. If the full extent of your relationship with someone is via social media, you can see the highlights of what's going on, but you won’t fully know what is going on with them. The level of depth and engagement isn’t there. It can become a very superficial relationship.
Social media can be a tool for good.
Use wisdom with what you’re using social media for. You can send encouraging messages or comments. You can use it as a launching point to start a conversation with someone to encourage them in their highs and lows. It can be used for good. But make sure that that is what you are using it for. If it is becoming a trigger, it is okay to step back and reset for a few months.
Be aware of when you are using social media
It might not be wise to use it right before bed when our brains are more reactive and emotional. We tend to make more negative decisions late at night. Think about the environment you are in and if you are going to social media as a response and leads to a trigger. Lack of awareness can result in social media being harmful for us.
