Description

Take a deep breath, because we’re going deep, deep underwater this week, with six questions about the dark, murky depths of the ocean. We also dive into some recent music, some modern mythology, and some very, very bad movies.

3:07: Q1 (Arts & Literature): What is the name of Jacques Cousteau’s most famous book, subtitled A Story of Undersea Discovery and Adventure, which describes his invention of the “aqua-lung” and the early days of scuba diving?

10:01: Q2 (Sports & Games): The two basic skills of what sport, part of the summer Olympics since 1984, are sculls, which are hand movements to propel the body, and the “eggbeater kick”, which is a form of treading water?

18:04: Q3 (Music): “Blue Ocean Floor” is the last song on the 2013 album, The 20/20 Experience, by what singer and actor who is better known for songs like “Cry Me a River” and “My Love”?

31:39: Q4 (Times & Places): The type of submarine built for the Royal Navy in 1902 was actually first used in what war, which began in 1904 over rival imperial motivations in Manchuria and Korea?

37:56: Q5 (Everything Else): In the Plato works Timaeus and Critias, what fictional place represents the antagonist naval power that besieges Ancient Athens which Athens repels as an allegory about the hubris of nations?

44:36: Q6 (Movies & TV): In 1989, five different movies were released that were underwater-themed.  Two focus on large sea creatures, one focuses on a shipwreck, one is about aliens, and one is about the search team looking for a sunken submarine.  They all had a poor reception except for one, which was nominated for 4 Academy Awards and won for Best Visual Effects.  Name any of them.
