Jen Pancake realized the truth at age three or four, thanks to her legendary snooping skills and her mom’s dangerously disorganized closet full of shoes and poorly hidden toys. Scramble found out the classic way — a loudmouth kid at school ruined it — though he still believed hard enough to miss blatantly obvious gift clues. And Pancake admits he not only knew early, but he manipulated what his younger siblings circled in the Sears catalog so he could benefit from their gifts. (Teddy Ruxpin blasting Van Halen? Absolutely.)
The group reflects on wish books, Spiegel catalogs, gifts hidden in increasingly lazy places, and the absolute collapse of parental effort as more kids were added to the house. In short: Christmas magic dies slowly… but hilariously.
