Elodie è una persona fantastica, una persona che ho incontrato, diciamo l'ultimo anno prima che partissi, lasciasse l'Australia, però dal primo momento che l'ho vista è subito scattata questa scintilla, volevo assolutamente sapere chi era questa donna bellissima, affascinante e interessante. Con Elodie ci siamo incontrate perché tutte e due facevamo parte del comitato consultivo delle donne di Darebin, che era il quartiere di Melbourne dove tutte e due abitavamo. Io all'epoca stavo preparando il materiale per presentare la domanda per fare un dottorato di ricerca, che poi non feci mai, mentre lei stava terminando il suo dottorato di ricerca. Subito attratta dalla sua personalità magnetica mi volli sedere a fianco a lei e cominciammo a parlare e non la smettemmo più, diventammo amiche e cominciammo a frequentarci anche fuori da questo comitato di donne di Darebin.
Elodie un'artista che ha un dottorato in arti visive e lei è specializzata nella rappresentazione della femminilità nell'arte visiva moderna. Ha appena pubblicato una monografia, vi dico il titolo perché solo il titolo mi fa impazzire, tradotto in italiano è 'Animalità e umanità nelle rappresentazioni francesi tardo moderne della femminilità nera'. Praticamente Elodie analizza come le donne, la femminilità, soprattutto delle donne che provenivano dall'Africa, o comunque avevano una diversità rispetto al mondo occidentale, come venivano rappresentate, come il modo in cui venivano rappresentate non faceva altro che perpetuare il razzismo, l'esclusione, come amplificava questi aspetti.
Insomma, perché ve ne sto parlando? Perché ho appena finito di lasciare un lunghissimo, anzi una serie di lunghissimi messaggi a Elodie per un progetto a cui stiamo lavorando insieme. Elodie is a fantastic person, a person I met, let's say the last year before I left Australia, but from the first moment I saw her this spark immediately clicked, I absolutely wanted to know who this beautiful woman was, fascinating and interesting. I met Elodie because we were both on the women's advisory board of Darebin, which was the Melbourne neighborhood where we both lived. At the time I was preparing the materials to apply for a PhD, which I never did, while she was finishing her PhD. Immediately attracted by her magnetic personality I wanted to sit next to her and we started talking and we never stopped, we became friends and we started seeing hanging out also outside the Darebin women's committee.
Elodie is an artist who has a PhD in visual arts and she specializes in the representation of femininity in modern visual art. She has just published a monograph, I tell you the title because the title alone drives me crazy, it is 'Animality and Humanity in French Late Modern Representations of Black Femininity'. Practically Elodie analyzes how women, femininity, especially women who came from Africa, or in any case appear different with respect to the Western world, how they were represented, how the way they were represented did nothing but perpetuate racism, exclusion, as it amplified these aspects.
