Episode 14: 'Elvis Presley' - Elvis Presley
'We’re Counting On You'
In the mid-1950s, a young Elvis Presley had his contract purchased by RCA Records for a staggering $35,000. Producer Sam Phillips stated: “If I could find a white boy that could sing like a black man, then I’d have something!”.
Born and raised in poverty, Elvis spent a lot of time in black communities and was exposed to a multitude of styles and genres emerging from these circles. Sneaking out of his church to visit the black gospel church on Sundays, Elvis knew what he liked and didn’t hold back when it came to song choice for his debut album.
What resulted was one of the most important albums in music history - one that could be classed as the first ever Rock ‘N’ Roll album. A record that would bridge, not only genres and musical styles, but ethnicities, cultures and communities.
