Description

Since Veterans Day is coming up, today let’s look at Hebrews 2:1-4 as we consider The Charge of the Light Brigade in honor of our courageous veterans who demonstrate bravery to us as they vigilantly protect us and guard our freedoms.

Have you ever heard of a poem written by Tennyson entitled, The Charge of the Light Brigade? It was inspired by the courage of 658 British troops who during the Crimean War charged a Russian fortified artillery position on horseback for more than one mile when told to do so by those in command. As you can imagine, it was costly. On October 25, 1854 one hundred and ten soldiers in the British cavalry bravely died and one hundred and eighty others were either wounded or captured. Eventually, the Crimean War was won in February of 1856 by an alliance of Britain, France, Turkey and Sardinia.

In some ways, Christians are like an army of light, battling against spiritual forces of darkness in this world. I thought of this comparison as I was reading Hebrews chapter 2:1-4. The first four verses stood out to me as a biblical strategy for pressing forward in the charge against evil. Like the outnumbered 658 soldiers mentioned above, we are often moving forward against the odds. But, like the poet says at one point in the second stanza, “…theirs not to make reply, theirs not to reason why, theirs but to do and die...” It may cost us some day to take our stand for Jesus Christ; but if so, He is still worthy of our best efforts regardless of the personal outcome in our spiritual battles. He assures us of everlasting life with Him, so faint not if things intensify against believers in Christ.
