To you I lift up my eyes, O you who are enthroned in the heavens! Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maidservant to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, till he has mercy upon us. Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us, for we have had more than enough of contempt. Our soul has had more than enough of the scorn of those who are at ease of the contempt of the proud. Psalm 123:1-4 (ESV)
Service
But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:25-28 (ESV)
1. With an attitude of worship
To you I lift up my eyes, O you who are enthroned in the heavens! Psalm 123:1 (ESV)
2. With attentiveness to the Master
Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maidservant to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, till he has mercy upon us. Psalm 123:2 (ESV)
“The Christian is the person who recognizes that our real problem is not in achieving Freedom, but in learning service under a better Master. The Christian realizes that every relationship that excludes God becomes oppressive. Recognizing that, we urgently want to live under the mastery of God.” – Eugene Peterson
3. With hopeful anticipation
Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us, for we have had more than enough of contempt. Our soul has had more than enough of the scorn of those who are at ease of the contempt of the proud. Psalm 123:3-4 (ESV)
