Before the rise of online freelance jobs, there were already the traditional freelancers — self-employed individuals who are not necessarily committed to a particular employer long-term (definition from wikipedia.org). In fact, the term “free-lance” has been around since the 1800’s, when author Sir Walter Scott, used the term in his book, Ivanhoe, to describe the knights or the “mercenary medieval warriors” of that age.
Traditional freelancers still exist today, from photographers, writers, actors, singers, wedding coordinators, and models.
