Terrance Williams has spent the last 26 years on Pennsylvania's death row for the June 1984 beating death of Amos Norwood. On September 28, Pennsylvania Common Pleas Judge M. Teresa Sarmina indefinitely stayed the execution.
This case, much like the case of Troy Davis (who was wrongly executed on September 21, 2011), has brought the subject of death penalty once again to the public forum. Information compiled by the Death Penalty Information Center shows 1307 people have been executed since 1977, an additional 141 people have been exonerated and freed from death row since 1973, 18 by DNA evidence. Damon Thibodeaux is the most recent person to be exonerated because of DNA evidence; the 300th exoneration achieved through DNA testing in the United States, according to the Innocence Project.
