今天很早从床上醒来

远眺海峡另一边

只见一条小船行驶于起伏的海面,

船上一盏孤灯点亮。记起

我的一个朋友曾经在小山顶上喊亡妻的名字

声传整个佩鲁贾。她亡故多年后

他仍然会在自己简陋的餐桌上为她备好餐盘,会

开窗让她呼吸新鲜空气。如此的表现

让我感到尴尬。他的朋友们亦有此感。我并不能看到那感情。

直到今天早晨。

Woke up early this morning and from my bed

looked far across the Strait to see

a small boat moving through the choppy water,

a single running light on. 

Remembered

my friend who used to shout his dead wife's name from hilltops around Perugia. Who set a plate

for her at his simple table long after she was gone. And opened the windows so she could have fresh air. Such display

I found embarrassing. So did his other friends. I couldn't see it.

Not until this morning.
