"Different circumstances in my life brought a change of school. It was during this time of change that I felt I had an opportunity to be a different person. Reinvent myself to some degree. Felt I wanted to experience all the 'forbidden' things I knew I shouldn't. It was at a friend's 18th birthday party that I had my first taste of alcohol. I'll never forget how it burnt my throat and tasted horrible. Yet at the same time, I felt strangely excited, that here I was doing something 'naughty' and no one would ever find out. That regardless, I would be able to control it. There would be no way that I would ever let it control me. I would just have to be sensible. I was strong enough to know my limit.
Boy was I wrong. As time passed my taste for alcohol increased. Instead of being satisfied with one glass, it became two, or three. Instead of enjoying 'premixed' drinks - where the alcohol is masked by 'lollywater' - I developed a taste for hard liquor. Unfortunately, most of the people I associated with encouraged this journey of 'exploration."
