From 1990 - 1994 I lived in London right near Portobello Road Market and I would visit the market rain, hail or shine every Saturday, to soak up the vibe, buy second hand clothes and to immerse myself in the culture of West London. I would also buy music on cassette as that was all I could afford.
The first cassette I bought (which I still have) was from a West Indian guy playing Maracas along to his huge Ghetto Blaster, which was quite literally blasting out the mixed tapes he was selling for 3 Pounds, taken straight from his vinyl collection.
That tape called 'Funky Hippy Shit' was my introduction to funky jazz, Roy Ayers, Weldon Irvine, Gary Bartz, RAMP and Dave Pike. This mix is a homage and thank you to him for turning me onto this music, which to this day reminds of my time in London, opened my ears and expanded my mind and continues to do so.
It's like De Ja Vu listening to this music and I can still hear those Maracas to this day...
