Sly & Robbie, consisting of Sly Dunbar (drums) and Robbie Shakespeare (bass), were the most influential rhythm section and production duo in Jamaican music history. Known as the "Riddim Twins," they defined the sound of reggae, dub, and dancehall for over four decades. They are estimated to have played on or produced over 200,000 tracks. In 1978, they founded their own label, Taxi Records, which produced hits for artists like Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Brown, and Beenie Man. Beyond reggae, they were world-class session musicians for international stars, including Grace Jones (notably on the albums Warm Leatherette and Nightclubbing), Bob Dylan (on Infidels), Joe Cocker, Mick Jagger, and The Rolling Stones. They were pioneers in transitioning reggae from traditional "roots" to the digital "80s sound," integrating electronic drums and synthesizers. They won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 1999 for Friends and received numerous nominations throughout their career.
