About the author
While Hardy achieved commercial success and critical acclaim for his novels, some of his more daring themes and depictions of human nature also brought him considerable criticism from Victorian society. In response to the public outrage over "Jude the Obscure," Hardy eventually turned away from novel-writing and focused more on poetry, where he found greater artistic freedom.
