As a Supreme Court justice, Ruth Bader Ginsburg successfully and tenaciously fought against gender discrimination, and towards equality and justice for women. We tend to take for granted the kind of rights that she fought for us to have as women, including the ability to rent or own a home, drive a car, collect a paycheck, or even get an abortion. Ruth Bader Ginsburg fought for many of the rights we as Black Women consider "our right," but there was a time where you could not buy a car without your husband or father's signature.
This week, Dr. Venus pays respect to the Notorious R.B.G. by giving a glimpse into her intelligence, grace, and strength. She also talks about why it's so important to vote and make sure her legacy is honored and not torn down by White Supremacy.
Key Takeaways:
[4:26] Dr. Venus discusses her personal fight with feminism, and the racism inside of feminism that has left Black Women ostracized and penalized in the past.
[8:44] The first slaves in North America were White Women. They were tricked to come from England, and ended up as slaves and seen as possessions that White Men could beat, maim, and kill. They were put in asylums and called crazy when they tried to speak up, and their only way of fighting was acquiescing. The same way now that Black Women have been positioned to be the "angry ones", White Women have had to code switch to be "soft and fragile" so they stay alive or aren't punished.
[17:03] Now with the passing of RBG, our vote is more important than ever. We must show up in numbers that can't be ignored. Between police brutality, climate control, a virus with no protocol, and now the future of women's rights, there is so much at stake.
[27:02] Dr. Venus has been focused on the police killing Black Men, but is now expanding her focus to stand with women worldwide for equality, thanks in part to the Notorious RBG.
[36:34] While Ruth and her husband were at Harvard, her husband got sick, and she took notes for him and helped him get through school. She was one of eight women at Harvard Law school and graduated at the top of the class. She paved the way for women to get equal pay and opportunity, including the Virginia Military Institute.
