Description

Truly powerful people empower others. However, as we've seen time and time again in politics and the workplace, power and privilege reveal someone's true character and can also bring out the evil. This week, Dr. Venus puts on her realist hat to examine President-Elect Biden's recent choice of surrounding himself with powerful & proven women in key roles. She of course is happy that he is making good on his promises and what this could mean for women everywhere, but she also has some questions. Will these women lookout for regular folk or will they become seduced with the power so long denied us? How will they be effective with the Men in Congress who think they are just tokens to appease the Far Left? Will the women of the white house abuse their power in the way men have, and what does abuse of power even look like so we can recognize it in our own life? Tune in to find out.

Key Takeaways:

[3:30] There is a definite difference in how Trump treats the women around him vs. how Biden does. Biden is setting up his team to reflect the most diverse roster of women in the history of the United States.

[5:50] There is a pattern of Black people being called in to help when things are bad. There is an expectation to clean up the mess and it's an uphill battle with little to no appreciation when things go well.

[7:03] Dr. Venus examines the situation that having all these diverse women in power is a great thing, but could be a setup for them to be seen as a failure with the wrong expectations. We are in the middle of a pandemic, the racial tension is palpable and dangerous, and our healthcare system is failing. It's not by any means an easy task for the women now taking the reins.

[11:25] You never know if you offend a woman. She won't tell you — she will just sabotage you. Dr. Venus shares her experience while working in the South as a Professor where she anticipated support from her colleague, but instead saw a clear abuse of power.

[16:03] An abuse of power can look like something grand and dramatic, or it can be as subtle as the silent treatment or withholding of information. The way you keep power from corrupting is to balance the power, which is hopefully what will happen in the case of the new team Biden and Harris are setting forth.

[18:57] Dr. Venus hopes that the women will triumph over the pressure and strain. We still should hold them accountable and make sure they do what they promised they were going to, but we also must realize they are flawed humans just like us and not superheroes that never make mistakes.

[23:15] It is a basic human emotion that when we feel pressured, we use our power to get what we want or to get back at someone.

[31:00] Truly powerful people empower others.
