'Back in the day, when I was young, I'm not a kid anymore ', but I still listen to bay music. The time period of 1993 - 1995 offered bay citizens the opportunity to enjoy an explosion of talent in the area and recognition from the national market. Too Short, E-40, Master P, JT The Bigga Figga and Souls of Mischief were being well received around the nation. Some of the music had a distinct bay slap, but the lyrical delivery and innovative word play made the music enjoyable to all listeners.
I was just entering high school and never really listened to popular music. During that year, I started building my CD collection around the artists that were popping up in Vallejo, Oakland, and SF. My daily life resembled nothing like the pictures that were being filled in my head by these cats, but I knew their hunger to succeed and their desire to create a better life than the one they were given.
Out here in the bay, we hustle like every day!
