ORIGINAL J5 EPISODES: GANGSTA
J5 is taking some time to work on new podcast episodes, so the two months will feature flashbacks to the good ol' days at BLR...
J5 1.6 Gangsta Rap is Hip Hop
26Jan11
Tonight's show is hard to listen to for the vast majority of the country. N-word, b-word, f-word, and every other disrespectful term imaginable in the dictionary (the rap dictionary) is used to express the harsh reality that many of these rappers actually experienced. The LA Riots gave some validity to the claims that things were not right in the hood. The problem came later when the money rolled in and the gangsta rap formula had been set. Spit about x,y,z and you can get gold, platinum. The 'realness' was diluted and gangsta images were rife for parody. I am still battling the moral dilemmas of listening to this genre of hip hop because there are so negative images that could be perpetuated if there is no dialogue about their meaning. Do I have to own a gun to be a man or have power? Do I need to treat authority with such disdain to be a man or have power? How can I keep it real as person not from the culture of the active participant?
Damn and y'all thought gangsta rap was so easy to consume...It's a hard pill to swallow, open up.
Respect to those artists I didn't play tonight: Spice 1, C-Bo, Totally Insane, Eightball & MJG, 3-6 Mafia, Kool G Rap, DPG, Above The Law, Bone, King Tee, M.O.P., Mack 10 & all other hood artists not mentioned.
