With the 9 to 5 film remake, Dano and Mason have taken it upon themselves to recast the originals with a more current bunch. They also chat with Simon Trevorrow and Grant Scicluna representing ‘Fresh’, a new web series written and produced by Nikki Tran.
Web series FRESH! springs from an exciting crop of new Aussie filmmakers, paying homage to market life with one of the most culturally diverse ensembles in Australian storytelling history. After its theatrical premiere at the Melbourne edition of Series Mania, lauded by Variety as a festival that “is to TV drama what the Cannes Film Festival is to film,” the short-form series was launched online, with all six episodes available on YouTube.
From creator and writer/producer Nikki Tran and producer Simon Trevorrow, FRESH! is a warm and satirical workplace dramedy that takes us into the joys and pitfalls of multi-culturalism against the backdrop of a Melbourne fresh food market. Set in a world where businesses are still family-run and bargains are bellowed in at least three different languages, the series brings into focus observations on race, workplace politics and family dynamics. FRESH! was filmed at local markets operating across Melbourne, including Footscray, Preston and Dandenong markets.
Tran says, “Footscray Market was integral to how my family connected to the wider community. As a child of parents who were once refugees, it’s important for me to create something that honours the experiences and stories of migrants in Australia, but not romanticise them.”
