On 9 February 2016, The Pancake Parlour restaurants will donate $1 to The Big Umbrella from every Pancake Stack sold. These much-needed funds will help The Big Umbrella’s A Real Meal program provide food to Melbourne’s marginalised community.

This morning on our Tuesday breakfast program Triple Threat,  a Pancake Parlour staffer was roped in to jumping on the mic to give presenters James and Cristina a run-down on this important day in history.

The Story Behind Pancake Day

Shrove Tuesday (known in some countries as Pancake Tuesday) is a day in February or March preceding Ash Wednesday (the first day of Lent) that is celebrated in some countries by consuming pancakes. In others, especially those (including Louisiana) where it is called Mardi Gras or some translation thereof, this is a carnival day, and also the last day of “fat eating” or “gorging” before the fasting period of Lent. JOY 94.9 is proud to be sponsored by Melbourne icon The Pancake Parlour and thank them for their support throughout the year.

Every Thursday during February, The Pancake Parlour’s team members (including some JOY volunteers and staff) will be volunteering with the A Real Meal program at Flinders Street Station to feed pancakes, soup and bakery goods to more than 300 people each week.
