Dominque Jackson has a story to rival us all. Facing adversity she immigrated to the United States from Trinidad and Tobago in the early 1990’s. She started her career doing runway in the New York ballroom scene and would eventually go on to becoming one of the most successful transgender models in the world. Famously compared to Naomi Campbell, Dominique has modelled for some of the biggest designers in the world and been in countless fashion editorials.
At 43, she now stars as Elektra Abundance in Ryan Murphy’s ground breaking new tv series Pose.
Set in New York, Pose highlights the historical ball room scene in the late 1980’s and features the largest cast of transgender actors in television history.
Dominique talks to Ben about the show and it’s important message. Plus the struggles she faced in her early days coming to terms with her identity and becoming the star she is today. Also her work with transgender charities and what is next for her.
